Hundertwasser #1
23.02.2025
Since this campaign has been going on for a while now, this first post is mainly to summarise what happened in the past. Future posts will then hopefully be about individual sessions (unlikely that I keep that pace) or mabye a few sessions put together as a chapter. The campaign can be devided into 2 parts as it was intended as a test run and short adventure first but then grew into a longer running campaign. So after a certain story event a timeskip happened and the story continued. So let's just do it like One Piece does and distinguish between pre timeskip and post timeskip.
Pre-Timeskip - the Cast
Wellius
- Race: Fishman
- Class: Nature Cleric
- Background: Chef
My character. A happy-go-lucky cook and cleric of nature. He loves good food, fishing and thus has great respect for rivers, lakes and the sea. The tavern he works at was the meeting spot for the party.
Everett
- Race: Owlman
- Class: Psychic Rogue
- Background: Spy?
On the surface just a an office worker at Hundertwasser's town hall but I soon learned that there's more to this guy. He is analytical and hyper correct but has his heart in the right place.
Sheran
- Race: Dragonborn
- Class: Barbarian
- Background: Blacksmith
Not the brightest candle on the cake but a very strong and capable fighter and artisan. Younger brother of Freyleigh. He also wields a huge sword that essentially looks like Guts' Dragonslayer! Cool!!!
Freyleigh
- Race: Kobold
- Class: Sorceror
- Background: Charlatan / Conspiracy theorist
Sheran's older but substantially smaller brother. Claims to be in communion with ancient gods and the universe itself and oftentimes squabbles with Everett over illicit divination boothes opening on the town square.
What happened pre timeskip?
All 4 characters lived in the town of Hundertwasser (lit. 'Hundred Waters'), a small town by a river. Wellius was the chef in a tavern, Sheran was earning money and learning under a married couple of Orcs as a Blacksmith. Everett worked as clerk in the town hall and Frey was mostly trying to sell divination to more or less gullible inhabitants of the town.
Life was peaceful until rumours about disappearances started spreading. A few good citizens went missing for weeks and the people started to get worried. One of them was Tamrin, the barmaid of the tavern that Wellius works at. One evening when the party was hanging out in the tavern again, Tamrin returned but she was not herself anymore. Essentially zombified, she stumbeled into the establishment and started attacking the guests. Our heroes sprang to action in this adventure's first combat. We tried to somehow save the girl but a spell does not discriminate and Frey more or less accidentally killed her. Not that we could've talked much to a zombie anyway... This was when the very eccentric mayor of Hundertwasser 'Wilfred the wonderful' - a gnome wizard - tasked us to find the remaining missing people. Since the mayor is Everett's employer and we're good friends we decided to help, not to mention our personal stakes in this matter. This quickly turned into a criminal investigation style adventure. One thing of note was that there seems to be something "mushroomy" about Tamrin's zombified form. We as players immediately suspected some kind of "Last of Us" zombie-fungus but our characters could only scratch their heads.
We received a list of 8 missing people (one of them being the dead barmaid) and used the town hall's records to find out where they lived. From there it was easy to plot a route through the town to check every missing person's house. Ask their families and look for clues. First on the list was an Elf woman called Elera who lived at the edge of town. She was known to the locals for her skills in healing, potion brewing and general knowledge about herbs. We found her hut to be empty and used our authority as official town investigators to just break into the place to find any clues. In the basement there was her little alchemy lab that she used for potion brewing and we were promptly attacked by THE low level enemies in fantasy settings: Rats!

Naturally, we won that fight but we were far away from finding any clues unfortunately. Our next stop on the list is the apartment of Mappa, a coworker of Everett at the townhall. This place was crucial for getting intel: Apparently Mappa had been investigating this missing person case privately already and had a cork board with all kinds of clues in her apartment. Two of those clues were crucial: 1. One other town hall clerk and the cousin of our beloved mayor has a room in the townhall with countless crystal balls that he can use to surveil the entire town Big Brother style. 2: A map of the town and surrounding area with an X north of it, a little upstream of the river. The cousin was called Jenkig and his involvement in this whole situation will soon become apparent. We chose visit the town hall and break into Jenkig's office. He put an alarm spell on the door and also installed a second, unofficial lock but we managed to break in. As described, we found a room full of differently sized and labeled crystal balls that this weirdo could use to basically spy on the whole town. We also find an archive of notes with date, time and places so we essentially found a surveillance log. Naturally, we wanted to know what happened to the missing people and searched for any info on them but the story is the same with everyone: They're walking through the streets when suddenly a weird distortion appears and the vanish as if teleported away.
